Martin Luther King Jr. Theatre Project

From 1994 to 2006, California Musical Theatre has contributed to its mission of educating new audiences and nurturing aspiring artists, in part, through the Martin Luther King Jr. Theatre Project.  In previous years this project celebrated cultural diversity by producing a new or classic work of American musical theatre whose themes resonate with multi-cultural artists and audiences. California Musical Theatre works to further Dr. King's ideals of inclusion and cultural diversity through the theatre arts.

Beginning with the 2006-07 academic year, California Musical Theatre affirmed its commitment to supporting the development of African American theatre by supporting
    SacramentoState’s Son/Ancestors Players.

In its various forms since 1995, California Musical Theatre’s Martin Luther King Jr. Theatre Project has been successful in developing audiences, introducing new works of theatre and creating opportunities for new generations of African American artists.
SacramentoState’s Department of Theatre and Dance has been a key contributor to the MLK Theatre Project since its inception, serving as the rehearsal and performance space, and providing key technical staff.  With the completion of our third consecutive “And the Dream Goes On!” staging in January 2006, the time seems right to enter a new phase and become an active contributor to Sacramento State’s new efforts to develop Sons/Ancestors Players, where the newest generation of African American writers, performers, directors and artisans are being developed.
